How has the process helped you plan an effective essay? You recently finished reading The Great Gatsby and analyzing the question “Is the American dream attainable or is it an illusion?” Now, it is time to plan a literary analysis essay examining F. Scott Fitzgerald’s claim that the American dream is an illusion. The steps of the writing process are listed below for your review. These are the same steps you used when you wrote your narrative, descriptive, and argumentative essays for this course.STEPS:1Prewriting, also known as brainstorming or planning: This is the first stage in which initial thoughts and ideas are considered. Important information to keep in mind is the type of writing that is assigned and its requirements, including its structure and characteristics. In this step, you will select your topic and note any relevant details related to that. 2Outlining and Drafting: Sometimes, these are two separate stages. An outline is a “skeleton” of how the content will be structured and organized when finished. Outlines can be simple or detailed but should always provide a plan or direction by logically ordering topics. A draft builds upon an outline. As the first attempt at composing, the draft explains, describes, or adds details to support the topics on the outline. Keep in mind that both outlines and drafts can and probably will change. 3Revising: Once the draft is finished, the writing is reviewed and evaluated for its clarity, organization, and other areas. A good practice is to compare the draft to the writing assignment’s requirements from the prewriting stage and make sure that all criteria are met. The goal in this stage is to end with a product that achieves its purpose in a way readers can understand easily.4Editing: The final stage of the writing process is like the revising stage because it reviews the writing. However, the editing stage focuses on the more technical details of grammar, spelling, mechanics, and conventions whereas the revising stage focuses on content. An effective editing process includes at least one close review by the author, reading their writing out loud to better detect any issues; afterwards, the writing is then peer-reviewed at least once.
